Term Loan for Business: Meaning, Interest Rates & Eligibility in India

Sep 2, 2026

A term loan is the cheapest way to fund machinery, expansion or refinance — if you structure it right. Here's how term loans for business work in India, what they cost in 2026, and how to qualify.

What is a term loan for business?

A term loan is a lump-sum amount disbursed once and repaid in fixed EMIs over a defined tenure — typically 12 to 84 months. Unlike cash credit or overdraft (which revolve), a term loan amortises: every EMI reduces the principal, and the loan closes at the end of the tenure.

When should a business take a term loan?

  • Machinery & capex: one-time equipment purchases with a long payback.
  • Expansion: new branch, fit-outs, capacity addition.
  • Refinance / debt consolidation: replacing expensive unsecured loans with a cheaper, longer-tenure facility.
  • EMI reduction: extending tenure or lowering rate to free up monthly cash flow.

Using a term loan for daily working capital strands cash; using CC or OD for capex inflates your effective cost. Matching the product to the purpose is where the real saving sits — the CC, OD and term loan primer explains how the three fit together.

Indicative term loan pricing on our panel runs 10.50% – 18.00% p.a. as on 10 July 2026, with secured loans at the lower end and unsecured ones higher. Processing fees, valuation and legal charges, insurance on a financed asset and any foreclosure lock-in all form part of the real cost. Current indicative ranges across products are on our rates page.

Eligibility and documents

Thresholds differ between lenders, so read these as the shape of the assessment rather than a pass mark.

  • A track record of continuous operations with filed income tax returns
  • Turnover and profitability that comfortably cover the proposed EMI
  • A clean promoter credit history — a stronger score generally means a better rate
  • KYC, GST returns, twelve months of bank statements, financials, and a proforma invoice for machinery loans

How to approach a term loan application

Pricing and structure for the same profile can vary widely between lenders, and applying bank by bank adds a credit enquiry each time. One structured comparison is usually the better route: we assess your profile once and place it with lenders on our panel whose policy fits. Start with our term loan page for eligibility and documents, run the numbers on the EMI calculator, or compare facilities in the business loan and MSME funding guide.
